As a NICU nurse, there are two Massachusetts nurse of the future nursing core competencies that I believe will have the greatest impact on my professional nursing practice: patient-centered care and communication. These competencies are particularly crucial in the NICU setting, where the parents of NICU babies become an integral part of our daily interactions.
Patient-centered care is of utmost importance in the NICU, as the well-being and emotional support of the parents are essential for the overall care of the babies. While we may not be directly assessing the parents’ vital signs, they become our “patients” in a sense, as we provide them with information, guidance, and emotional support throughout their journey. By focusing on patient-centered care, we can ensure that the parents feel heard, involved, and empowered in their baby’s care.
Communication is another vital competency in the NICU. The level of communication required in this setting is extensive, as we interact with various individuals and departments throughout the day. Effective communication is not only necessary for coordinating care within the NICU team but also for collaborating with other healthcare professionals such as physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, pharmacists, neonatal nurse practitioners, and physicians. Clear and concise communication ensures that everyone is on the same page, leading to improved patient outcomes and a well-functioning NICU environment.
In the context of the AACN BSN essentials, interprofessional communication and collaboration play a significant role in enhancing future nursing practice. In the NICU, where a specialized interprofessional team cares for premature infants and newborns, effective communication and collaboration are essential for providing optimal care and improving patient health outcomes. This includes not only communicating professionally within the team but also effectively translating complex medical information to parents in a way that they can understand and make informed decisions.
By honing my skills in interprofessional communication and collaboration, I can actively participate in rounds, stay updated on the day’s expectations, and strengthen my relationships with the interprofessional team I work with daily. This will ultimately enhance my ability to provide comprehensive care to NICU babies and support their parents throughout their NICU journey.
In conclusion, patient-centered care and communication are two Massachusetts nurse of the future nursing core competencies that will significantly impact my future professional nursing practice as a NICU nurse. By prioritizing these competencies, I can ensure that the parents feel supported and involved in their baby’s care while effectively communicating and collaborating with the interprofessional team for improved patient outcomes.
