Communication is another vital competency in the NICU. The level of communication required in this setting is extensive, as we interact with various individuals and departments throughout the day. Effective communication is not only necessary for coordinating care within the NICU team but also for collaborating with other healthcare professionals such as physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, pharmacists, neonatal nurse practitioners, and physicians. Clear and concise communication ensures that everyone is on the same page, leading to improved patient outcomes and a well-functioning NICU environment.
In the context of the AACN BSN essentials, interprofessional communication and collaboration play a significant role in enhancing future nursing practice. In the NICU, where a specialized interprofessional team cares for premature infants and newborns, effective communication and collaboration are essential for providing optimal care and improving patient health outcomes.
