Developmental theories, as discussed previously, seek to describe
\nthe psychological, emotional, and perceptual changes people
\nundergo during their life span. As such, these theories attempt to
\nidentify key developmental stages and the changes that might
\noccur. For example, the transition to college frequently involves a
\nsearch to define oneself in the context of the larger world and an
\ninterest in both cultural and intellectual exploration. As part of this
\nprocess, students participate in new social interactions and may
\nbe exposed to increased opportunities to participate in substance
\nuse and other high-risk behaviors. Developmental theories
\nattempt to provide points which explain healthy and unhealthy
\nbehaviors that individuals choose. This week you examine how
\ntheories may account for substance abuse in girls and women.
\nFor this Discussion, review the week\u2019s Learning Resources and
\nchoose a type of substance abuse (i.e., alcohol, tobacco, illegal
\ndrugs, or prescription drugs). Research girls\u2019 and women\u2019s use of
\nthe substance and consider how developmental theory accounts
\nfor effects of this substance abuse. Also consider theory-based
\ninterventions you might apply to these effects.
