\nindividuals to associate with friends, share messages, and post pictures.
\nPeople can communicate with others via the Internet to inquire about jobs,
\napartments, and news events. When individuals use these sites to commit crimes,
\nhowever, the question then arises as to who is accountable for the crimes
\ncommitted.
\nFor this
\nDiscussion, select one of the following cases: Kathleen Edward or Philip
\nMarkoff. Review the case you selected and consider the potential accountability
\nof the Internet site (Facebook or Craigslist) for the crime committed.<\/p>\n
Kathleen Edward (2010)<\/p>\n
Kathleen Edward of Trenton, Michigan, was a 7-year-old girl dying of
\nHuntington\u2019s disease. As she battled her disease, she was subjected to
\ncyber-bullying by her 33-year-old neighbor, Jennifer Petkov. Petkov used her
\nFacebook page to post hateful messages, such as \u201cI can\u2019t wait until you die,\u201d
\nand ghoulish art of Kathleen, including Kathleen\u2019s face under a skull and
\ncrossbones. Petkov also posted a doctored picture of Kathleen\u2019s mother,who had
\ndied a year earlier of Huntington\u2019s disease, being held by the Grim Reaper.
\nEventually a restraining order was placed against Petkov.<\/p>\n
Philip Markoff (2009)<\/p>\n
Philip Markoff was a Boston University medical student who became known as the
\n\u201cCraigslist Killer.\u201d This was primarily because he found his victims via their
\nadvertisements posted on Craigslist. Markoff utilized this Internet site to
\ncontact his victims, such as Julissa Brisman, a masseuse found dead in a hotel
\nroom after her appointment with Markoff. He robbed and attacked two other women
\nhe connected with via the use of Craigslist before getting caught. He committed
\nsuicide while in jail awaiting trial.<\/p>\n
