FHS 1500 \u2013 Observation #1<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0Toddler – 18 months to 2 years<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0\u00a0OBSERVATION GUIDELINES<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0You are to conduct an observation of a toddler (18 months \u2013 35 months) that you do not know.\u00a0 Toddlers can be observed in one of several settings such as a child care facility, a playgroup, a nursery class (church or other volunteer organization) or another location in which the toddler has the opportunity to interact with other non-related children and non-parental adults.\u00a0 Observing your own children, siblings, cousins or nieces and nephews is not acceptable.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u00a0Note:<\/strong>\u00a0If you choose to complete your observation at the Redwood Campus\u2019 Eccles Lab School, the best times for observations of children are from 9:00 \u2013 11:00 and 2:30 \u2013 4:30, Monday through Friday.\u00a0 Tell the person at the front desk that you are there to observe the two-year-old class.<\/p>\n \u00a0When entering any child care facility, report to the office and identify yourself as an FHS 1500 student needing to do an observation.\u00a0 The office personnel will explain their policies and procedures regarding the observation of children in their facility.\u00a0 Please be aware that some child care programs may not allow observations in their facilities.<\/p>\n \u00a0Each observation should be at least 1 \u00bd to 2 typed pages in length.\u00a0 Check all spelling, grammar etc. Please, do a complete, professional job.\u00a0 The observation should include some basic demographic information such as the date, time and location of the observation, approximate age of the child and a general description of the environment in which the observation took place. Expect to spend\u00a0at least<\/span>\u00a025 – 30 minutes observing.<\/p>\n \u00a0For each observation, please include a brief description of the child as it relates to his\/her:<\/p>\n \u00a0Physical Development –<\/strong>\u00a0Gender, approximate height and weight (Is the child taller or shorter than the other children in the group?\u00a0 Is the child skinny, average, and overweight?)\u00a0 How does the child move?\u00a0 Arms?\u00a0 Legs?\u00a0 Coordination?\u00a0 How does the child compare to others in the class?\u00a0 How does it compare to the descriptions in our text?<\/p>\n \u00a0Intellectual Development<\/strong>\u00a0– How do you assess the child’s intellectual development?\u00a0 What about the child’s language development?
