\nInstructions for \u2018Your MLQ \/ Transformational Leadership Profile\u2019
\nThe purpose of this Developmental Activity is for you to use Transformational
\nLeadership theory to assess your leadership.
\n1. Download the \u201cMLQ-5\u201d and complete all 70 questions. You should answer the
\nquestions as honestly as possible; they can help you to develop your leadership
\nand nobody else will see your answers.
\n2. Fill out the Answer Sheet at the end of the questionnaire.
\n3. On the Answer Sheet, there are seven columns labelled A \u2013 G. Each column
\nlists 10 question numbers. For each column, add up your answers to the 10
\nquestions (you will get a number from 0 \u2013 40) and then divide that number by 10;
\nthis will give you the average score for that column. Make a note of this number.
\n4. Download the \u201cMLQ Profile form\u201d and construct your MLQ profile. Transfer the
\naverage score from each column on the Answer Sheet to the corresponding label
\non the MLQ Profile form (eg. Column A on the Answer Sheet corresponds to
\nLaissez-faire on the MLQ Profile form) and plot that score.
\nThis is an example of a completed MLQ Profile form (UK norms)
\n5. Use the norms (see below) to determine your percentile for each score. If you
\nare from \/ work in the UK, use the UK norms. If you are from \/ work in Southeast
\nAsia, it may be more appropriate to use those norms.

\nThe following are norms for the MLQ. The red column labels correspond to the
\ncomponents in Bass\u2019 hierarchical model (LF = Laissez-faire, ME = Management
\nby Exception, CR = Contingent Reward, IC = Individualised Consideration, IS =
\nIntellectual Stimulation, IM = Inspirational Motivation, II = Idealized Influence). The
\nnumbers in these columns are scores from the MLQ. Thus, a score of 0.4 in the
\nLF column represents the 30th percentile for Laissez-faire.

\n6. You can now interpret your scores. For example, a score of 3.5 for Intellectual
\nStimulation puts you in the 90th percentile (UK norms). That means that for
\nIntellectual Stimulation only 10% of people in the UK scored higher than you (ie.
\nyou scored higher than 90% of people in the UK). In terms of Transformational
\nLeadership theory, this suggests that providing your subordinates with intellectual
\nstimulation is one of your leadership strengths.
\nRemember, that Bass did not consider Laissez-faire to be a leadership style. He
\nincluded it in the hierarchy to contrast it with his \u2018legitimate\u2019 leadership styles \u2013
\ntransactional and transformational. In \u2018traditional\u2019 team settings, a high Laissez faire score usually indicates a leadership weakness, but in project ( help with nursing paper writing from experts with MSN & DNP degrees) team settings
\n(depending on the nature of the task and the people you\u2019re leading) a hands-off
\nstyle may sometimes be appropriate.
