Race Relations and the American Experiences

Race Relations and the American Experiences – Week 6 Assignment

W6 Assignment

Many views of the Middle East are influenced by the news media. One example is the portrayals of ongoing difficulties between Israelis and Palestinians. How are current political conflicts in Israel and throughout the Middle East beneficial or harmful to Americans’ perspectives of American Jews and Arab Americans?

Visit http://www.aljazeera.com/, the website for Al Jazeera, a state-funded broadcaster based in Qatar which focuses on the Middle East. What sorts of stories do you see at the Al Jazeera site? Do they differ, and if so how, from the kinds of news stories at websites for Western news organizations such as The New York Times or The Washington Post? Select one article to read from the front-page headlines of Al Jazeera. Do the same for an article on the front page of a major Western news organization. How are they different from news stories on the websites of Western news organizations like The New York Times or The Washington Post? Choose one of the stories on the front page of Al Jazeera to read. Do the same thing with a story on the front page of a major Western news source.

Prepare an essay of at least 500 words, addressing the different concerns above as they relate to Arab Americans and American Jews. Be sure to cite your sources and use APA format.
